Here are a few tips to stay warm, safe and green over the weekend.

1. Use blankets and dressed in comfortable warm clothing .
2. When using heaters try to stay in the area where they will be used with others. More people create more heat in the room and require less use of small heat in multiple areas reducing expenses and increasing safety.
3. Never leave an unattended space heater running or burning.
4. Warm green tea and organic coffee warm you from the inside out. Cane sugar and stevia are better for your short and long term health.
5. It’s Valentines Weekend cuddle up with the ones you love and keep warm.

Have a love filled warm weekend. Remember to love the earth while you do!

Green In Gwinnett with Sustainable Mill Creek

Sustainable Mill Creek is a case study underway since fall 2008 and continuing through much of 2010.  The study area touches parts of Suwanee, Buford, and Gwinnett County with a focus on the Mall of Georgia / Mill Creek area.  Many challenges and successes can be found throughout this area: growth demands and recent economic downturns, effects of clearcutting vs. valuing urban agroforestry applications in development, water quality and stream buffers, transportation initiatives, recreational access, and a preserved but little-known wetlands/nature center adjacent to the mall.

The research looks at social, economic, and ecological sustainability within this suburban/urban setting and also features community input and outreach.  Online surveys have started and will continue, giving insight about community values regarding the environment and quality of life — both within and outside the study area so that participants from other regions can share as well.  School surveys are being launched to coincide with volunteer class presentations in April 2010 for Earth Day week.  Please follow this new blog as we share details and touch on specific topics related to community sustainability.

Recycle Those Christmas Trees to”Keep Georgia Beautiful“

Bring One for the Chipper is Georgia’s annual Christmas tree recycling program. Each year, Keep Georgia Beautiful works with private sponsors to organize the recycling event. These statewide sponsors included The Home Depot, The Davey Tree Expert Company and WXIA-TV. Numerous local sponsors and volunteers also make contributions and provide in-kind services across the state.

How can you help? Bring your Christmas Tree to one of the fire department locations or other locations listed below.  Make sure your Christmas Tree has all of the lights and decorations removed from it.  Do not bring artificial Christmas Trees.

The Chipper program involves hundreds of Georgia communities and thousands of volunteers. Since its inception, the program has recycled over 4.8 million Christmas trees. The mulch from these trees has been used for playgrounds, local government beautification projects, and individual yards. You can support the Chipper program by bringing your cut Christmas tree to a designated drop off site or volunteering with your local coordinator to collect trees.

Atlanta Ink Cartridge and Laser Toner Recycling

Do you wonder what to do with that empty cartridge when your printer or copier has used all of it’s ink or toner up and it is time to replace it? Do you know the impact that tossing that laser toner or ink cartridge into the trash has on your environment?

This year, over 700 million ink and toner cartridges will be consumed in the United States. A small fraction of empty cartridges will be recycled, but many more end up in landfills. Hazardous chemicals from the cartridges can pollute the environment, while the plastic they’re made of will take centuries to decompose. -Wastewise

One local option is a company based in Gwinnett County. Print Green USA offers recycling services for your spent and/or surplus imaging supplies (laser toners, ink cartridges, drums, etc). Print Green USA, Inc not only sells laser toners, printer drums and ink cartridges, but they will recover their clients empties for recycling.  They also will recycle empty laser toners and ink cartridges that were not purchased there.

When you landscape use native plants.  Native plants typically cost less, use less water, and are easier to care for.  Plus, your yard will look right at home.

Did you know that if every U.S. household replaced just one light bulb with an Energy Star bulb, we’d save enough energy to light three million homes for over a year?  Pretty amazing huh? Simple.  So let’s make some simple changes Gwinnett!  The prices on CFL bulbs have come way down.  The Lowe’s in Suwanee sells them for a very reasonable price and they seem to have frequent sales there.

Reduce your carbon footprint and energy bill next summer by using a table, ceiling or whole-house fan which will extend the typical human comfort range, usually between 72 and 78 degrees F,to around 82 F by simply adding a breeze of about 1.9 mph. So when the heat becomes unbearable reach for a fan before the thermostat. A typical fan uses about the same amount of energy as a 100-watt light bulb, which is dramatically less than any air conditioning unit.

Gwinnett. How To Make Your Lil Goblins Even More Green This Halloween!

 

Gwinnett: Did you know that Americans use more than 380 million plastic bags and more than 10 million paper bags every year. Plastic bags end up either in landfills or discarded in nature.  This waste then kills thousands of marine mammals annually, and when it eventually does break down, it contaminate our land and water which are our valuable resources.

Reusable bags are not only better for the environment at Halloween, they’re also better for our children. Paper and plastic bags can rip easily, spilling Halloween treats and we know that our kids don’t like that. Reusable bags are much more durable and practical!

When the little ghosts and goblins in your family go trick-or-treating this Halloween, make sure they carry reusable bags or containers that don’t need to be discarded after they are used.

Cloth or canvas shopping bags, or even pillowcases, make terrific eco-friendly alternatives to paper or plastic bags, or to the molded plastic jack-o-lanterns so many kids use to collect candy at Halloween.

Harvest Farms and Suwanee Community Garden Volunteer Day “A Success!”

We here at Green In Gwinnett Area posted an event on our Facebook events page that asked for volunteers to assist in the beginning stages at the Suwanee Community Garden.  What a great day it turned out to be.  We would like to thank Jessica Roth from the City of Suwanee for putting together such a successful and community oriented event.  Nearly 60 people showed up to help out!  There were members of Green In Gwinnett Area, Harvest Farms, Georgia Piedmont Land Trust, and other folks from Suwanee and neighboring communities.  Food and refreshments were provided for the volunteers from companies such as Honeybaked Ham and Subway.  There were prizes given away from local companies such as Print Green USA which donated (9) $30 gift certificates for laser toners, ink cartridges, or printer drums.

It is great to have a city like Suwanee Georgia who takes such good care of their residents.  Be sure to checkout the new Suwanee Downtown Website!

Drink filtered water instead of bottled water. Filling and reusing a stainless steel container created for long term use with water is more beneficial to the environment and your pockets than purchasing bottled water. With all of the talk about chemicals used in bottling plastics it may also prove to be even more beneficial to your health.

Recycle! In Gwinnett county (Snellville, Suwanee, Duluth, Centerville, Lawrenceville, Norcross etc) all of the garbage disposal companies (including whoever eventually ends up with the final contract) pick up the little blue bins that take away plastics, aluminum cans and glass. Call your waste disposal provider today. The more you recycle the less you throw away. This cuts down on how often you purchase garbage bags, that saves you money. WalkGreen…and Save!

City of Suwanee Needs You! Community Garden Volunteers!

The City of Suwanee will host a community volunteer day Saturday, October 24, at the Harvest Farm at White Street Park site. Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m-5 p.m. to help get the site ready for construction, which is scheduled to begin next month. Volunteers will help dismantle part of the existing barn, remove old fencing, and clear out the creek and wooded areas. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Volunteers must sign up in advance. For additional information, contact Assistant to the City Manager Jessica Roth, 770/945-8996.

How can you contribute to Green and include your families? One way to be a little more green is to buy local food. It takes a lot less fuel to bring peaches from rural Georgia to Suwanee than it does to bring one from Chile.   Suwanee also has the new community garden>>>It can be hard to find local produce at your neighborhood grocery store, but luckily Gwinnett County and the surrounding area have a few summertime farmer’s markets! You might just like some yummy organic food.
