Suwanee Georgia – A Beautiful Day and They Know It

March 17, 2015

Beerfest, Suwanee Day, Single Moms

Lately there has been a plethora of days where the weather has been near perfect! Weather that I have missed because it is similar to that which I grew up with in Michigan. It is not common to have a day where you can feel dry and warm yet breathe comfortably here in Suwanee Georgia.  Unfortunately for the Suwanee Beerfest patrons the weather had an exception for their annual beer party which seems like it is gaining popularity among the single moms club in the middle to upper class “utopian-like” suburb of Atlanta.  It rained and stayed gloomy forcing the mostly middle-aged patrons to tip their heads back for an extra one to compensate for the lack of sunshine!  I could only think of one phrase the entire time “mom-jeans”! You know, the mom-jeans brought to attention on Saturday Night Live that have this odd way of, well nevermind…?

Suwanee is very proud of their 3rd place (I believe) award for the best place in America to raise children by some little known website. However Money magazine published that the north metro community of Suwanee is ranked #33 on Money’s 2013 list of best places to live.  Number 33 is apparently high enough to make it the top ranked community in the entire state of Georgia!

Suwanee In Money Magazine

Suwanee is no stranger to Money magazine; Suwanee can be found in Money’s list of Best Places to Live in previous years, ranking #10 – 2007 and #35 – 2009. Family Circle magazine ranked Suwanee as one of the nation’s 10 Best Towns for Families.  I would love to hear what the criteria are for these rankings.  Perhaps the town with the most cameras spying on their citizens so that they can accurately assess the level of fabulous that they have achieved is one way.  Another could be the Suwanee cops continuously cruising through parking lots with their trunk mounted license plate scanners/cameras getting a feel for where everyone is all of the time. In addition you can see a Suwanee patrol car parked on the side of Lawrenceville-Suwanee road documenting (recording plates) everyone who passes in and out via I-85.  Makes you wonder if they really even need those cameras at every single traffic light watching over their citizens.  Especially with all of the new Dodge Chargers running around.  The police get new cars nearly as fast as they get new police officers to replace the ones who leave or get fired for inappropriate acts with local bartenders (true story). Not intentionally harping on their police force (maybe a little) but it is one aspect of Suwanee that does stick out much more than any other. Does a town with 16,000 people need the world’s most advanced and intrusive police force?

Parks in Suwanee

The parks in Suwanee are beautiful though. They have done a magnificent job placing parks with playgrounds around the city. They have also successfully connected the parks by a system of bike paths that run for miles around the City of Suwanee.  A+++ job on their parks. You can even find a dog park if you go out from the city center a little towards Bear’s Best golf course on Johnson Road. There is a dog park where Fido can run free and “most” of the owners pick up the poos left behind. Kids love Suwanee because of these parks. Suwanee maintenance doesn’t get enough credit. These guys should be recognized. They do a fantastic job keeping the parks clean and safe for the children.  Speaking of safety, I heard that the Suwanee Police provide a home for officer(s) to live in at Sim’s Lake Park. I visited and I did see a small home on the property with a Suwanee police patrol car sitting out front.  Can anyone confirm this? Leave us a comment or a remark about any other part of this post! We’d love to hear from you. Why does Suwanee need all of that force? Mom-jeans?

Sim’s Lake Park (Suwanee) Located at 4600 Suwanee Dam Road. Suwanee’s Sims Lake Park is a popular park because of its proximity to several neighborhoods.  Sim’s Lake is also a local favorite due to its many amenities and childlike environment.
